WOODLAND PLANTING

Japanese maple
These small, deciduous trees are appreciated for their graceful form, vibrant colours, and attractive foliage, which can be richly tinted or finely divided. Typically slow-growing they serve as ideal small trees for traditional Japanese gardens. They also adapt well to the limited spaces of contemporary suburban gardens, whether planted directly in the ground or in pots.

Euonymus alatus
This is a dense, bushy deciduous shrub with dark green leaves that turn striking shades of strawberry red in autumn. Known as the winged spindle, it derives its name from the large corky wings that are revealed after the leaves have fallen. Best planted in an area where the sun can catch the spectacular autumn foliage, it makes an excellent specimen plant for a well-drained shrub border or woodland edge.

Acer triflorum
Acclaimed for its stunning exfoliating bark and vibrant colour, the award-winning Acer triflorum (Three-Flowered Maple) is a landscape treasure. Its light ash-brown bark peels in vertical strips, revealing copper-brown wood beneath. The trifoliate leaves are green above and grey-green underneath in spring and summer, turning red and orange in autumn before falling. With its upright, rounded shape, this slow-growing maple is a delightful four-season tree.
Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress
Awarded "Plant of the Year" at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013, remarkable mahonia boasts spine-free leaves, making it suitable for planting near paths or doorways where you might brush against them. 'Softress' is a compact, evergreen shrub, ideal for larger pots and providing year-round interest. Alternatively, it makes a splendid addition to a sunny or partially border.

Geranium sanguineum 'Album'
This lovely cranesbill is covered in pure white, cup-shaped flowers from May to June. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, Geranium sanguineum 'Album' quickly forms loose clumps of finely cut, dark green leaves, are useful for suppressing weeds. It makes charming addition to a cottage garden scheme or can be placed towards the front of a mixed border.
